Mission and Strategic Matches

The mission and guiding principles of the UNM Health Sciences Center (UNMHSC) are to:

  1. Provide added value to health care through leadership in providing innovative, collaborative education;
  2. Advance the frontiers of science through research critical to the future of health care;
  3. Deliver health care services at the forefront of science; and
  4. Facilitate partnerships with public and private biomedical and health enterprises.

This project is a strategic match for UNM's overall mission because the ACCESS leadership has worked together for eight years to improve patient care through the use of telehealth. Because UNMH is the major provider of emergent neurosurgical and neurological care in New Mexico, ACCESS will allow us to examine the impact of an improved and expanded telehealth system. Since New Mexico is an underserved and largely rural state, it is our mission to make telehealth the standard of care delivery for every New Mexico hospital in need of specialty care.

ACCESS is a strategic match for the CMS mission to improve health care for Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP beneficiaries and provide access to specialty care while lowering costs. Our model will provide ad hoc neurological and neurosurgical specialty care for emergencies, which will prevent unnecessary hospital admissions and transfers to tertiary referral centers while providing state-of-the-art care for patients and improving patient satisfaction.
